- Car Rentals and Transportation

The most common form of transport around the island is by motor scooter. Small 50cc to 100 cc scooters are favored by locals as well as tourists. Driving is on the left hand side of the road and A Cook Island Driving license is required for both rental cars and scooters and may be obtained from the local police station in Avarua Town. You must produce a driving license from your home country or take a driving test. The cost is NZ $25.00, however it makes for a nice souvenir.

Push bikes are also an excellent form of transport as the main road on Rarotonga Island is basically flat and makes for easy cyclying. It takes approximately 3 hours at an easy pace to cycle round the island. Push bikes are available for hire at all major hotels and motels around the island. The cost is $12.00 per day.

There is a circle island bus running every half hour from 7:30am to 4:30pm and again from 6:30pm to 10:30pm. The fare is $4.00 for a return trip journey. It does not matter in which direction you catch the bus for you will end up at your destination. The bus travels clockwise on the hour and anti clockwise on the half-hour.

Taxi service is available upon advance booking. There are no meters and rates vary substantially from one taxi to the next. Always obtain the fare before entering the taxi to avoid any problems. Taxis are sometimes difficult to obtain in the evening hours so it is wise to book ahead by telephone.

Rental cars, vans and jeeps are available for rental.Both Budet and Avis car rental services are represented on Rarotonga Island. It is wise to book in advance as there is a limited supply of rental vehicles on the island.
