- Outer Islands

The 15 islands of the Cook Islands are scattered over two million square miles of the South Pacific Ocean. Eight islands from the Southern Group: Aitutaki, Manuae, Mitiaro, Takutea, Atiu, Mauke, Mangaia, and the capital, Rarotonga. There is regularly scheduled air services from Rarotonga to Aitutaki, Mitiaro, Atiu, Mauke, and Mangaia. The two atolls of Takutea and Manuae are uninhabited and are reached only by boat by its trustees.

Seven islands make up the Northern Group: Penrhyn, Manihiki, Rakahanga, Pukapuka, Nassau, Suwarrow, and Palmerston. Only two: Penrhyn and Manihiki have weekly air service. Rakahanga may be reached by interisland boats from Manihiki. The other Northern Group islands may only be reached by the adventurous traveler aboard periodic interisland trading ships. All of the Northern Group Islands are low coral atolls with central lagoons.

The climate is tropical, however average temperatures can vary quite considerably from the southernmost island of Mangaia at 21 degrees south of the equator. December to March is hurricane season with average temperatures of 30 degrees C (88 degrees F) and high humidity. From April to November, the climate in the Southern Group is mild and equable with temperatures averaging 23 degrees C (74 degrees F)

Other than Aitutaki, the outer islands do not have restaurants or bars or other trappings of commercial tourism development and welcome "travelers" rather than tourists with open hospitality and a rare insight into life within small closeknit island communities. Electricity usually runs until 10pm at night, although many islands have no power from mid-morning until late afternoon. Many outer island accommodation properties do not have hot water, however, the hospitality is generous and spontaneous as will be the invitation to join in local events whether it be as a spectator or participant!

The Outer Islands are unhurried, unspoiled, and unforgettable. Leave your fine jewelry, fancy clothes and high heels at home because you will not need them. If you like meeting new people, experiencing new cultures, nature walks, and lots of leisure time then a trip to the Outer Islands is for you. It is a true Cook Islands Experience!
